I own a '98 Super Decathlon. There is a slow fuel drip where the fuel shutoff valve lever connects to and is cotter keyed to a nut inside the cockpit. I've already drained the fuel system and I'm ready to remove the valve to see what's going on. Before I do, is there a tech order, or other specific instruction, to follow regarding disassembly, inspection, and re-assembly of the valve? Thank you.
Hello Ryan,
We do not have a set of instructions for opening the fuel shutoff. With the fuel drained, you should be able to free it from the system and upon doing so, you will see that there is a nut that can be loosened where the shutoff handle attaches. If you take that off, you will find an o-ring on the ball valve that is the likely culprit. Unfortunately since that was a purchased part, we do not have the breakdown of the internals on it. Often, people will clean up the ball valve and match up the o-ring with a fuel safe replacement and then retighten the nut after putting it back together. We do not specify a specific torque on this nut. In this instance, you have the shutoff model that we used through the 90's up until about 2021. If you are unable to stop the weeping, we do have provision for installing our current shutoff by modifying the currently installed bracket as opposed to having to weld a new one in place. The details for this are outlined in service letter 456.
I don't have an answer for you, but might want to look at the website shown below. I get pretty good answers there. Lee
